Topic description
This topic provides a broad introduction to and overview of university study and the nursing profession. There is particular emphasis on preparing nursing students to study successfully at a tertiary level, and a focus on the relationship between nursing and academic/university learning.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • assist students to understand and begin to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to successfully study the Bachelor of Nursing program

  • begin to develop an understanding of the nursing profession (including the roles and responsibilities of the registered nurse, emerging roles outside hospital settings and potential career pathways) and an awareness of other members of healthcare teams

  • begin to develop an understanding of how information technology can be used to facilitate learning and progression through the Bachelor of Nursing program

  • develop a commitment to lifelong learning.

Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate a beginning understanding of the knowledge, attitudes and skills required to be a registered nurse in different work environments

  • engage with and begin to articulate the roles and responsibilities of the registered nurse including professional, legal and ethical standards, and within multidisciplinary healthcare teams

  • demonstrate a capacity for the academic and professional skills needed to study successfully at university

  • demonstrate active learning and study strategies

  • demonstrate development of reflective and critical thinking skills

  • effectively use information, communication and information technology at an appropriate level to facilitate personal study and course progression

  • begin to develop 'self-care' strategies

  • describe and begin to develop the Flinders University graduate qualities

  • communicate (verbally and in written form) effectively with peers and university staff

  • articulate the services available to assist students throughout their degree.
