Topic description
This topic explores the concept of clinical governance, and explores further the following aspects of clinical governance in a continuous cycle of 'do and review' :

  • research and evidence-based practice

  • clinical practice

  • the safety of client, profession and service

  • the role of an interprofessional healthcare team.

Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • further explore the elements of clinical governance and introduce clinical practice improvement

  • explore the role of the registered nurse in relation to clinical governance and clinical practice improvement, including as part of an interprofessional healthcare team

  • examine the electronic collection, management, use, storage and sharing of healthcare information and how this may facilitate clinical governance.

Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  1. describe clinical governance and risk management in clinical practice and explain the need for this

  2. describe the structures and processes of clinical governance in healthcare settings

  3. describe at a developing level how e-health information sharing can facilitate clinical governance and practice

  4. describe and discuss the implications of implementing unsafe nursing/health care

  5. explain the need for clinical practice improvement and the use of research to inform practice and quality improvement

  6. identify and describe barriers to clinical practice improvement and develop strategies for overcoming these

  7. reflect on their role in relation to clinical practice improvement

  8. identify risks in the healthcare setting and their role in documenting and reporting risk

  9. apply principles and tools to guide decision-making about clinical and professional practice and justify their own practice

  10. use various types of evidence to inform practice, including validated clinical practice guidelines

  11. critically assess evidence to evaluate its relevance, credibility and rigour to practice

  12. use appropriate communication strategies to plan, implement and evaluate care in an interprofessional context
