Topic description
This topic requires students to deepen their evidence-based understanding and application of integrated nursing care for clients across the lifespan.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • integrate knowledge and skills related to anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology, in order to provide high-quality integrated nursing care for clients across the lifespan.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • articulate a rationale for the planning, implementation and evaluation of care across the lifespan for patients with a variety of illnesses based on the best available critically analysed evidence

  • apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to pathophysiology in order to provide comprehensive nursing care

  • apply the principles of pharmacology to nursing practice including the use of ICT to access and evaluate clinical information

  • recognise and describe the indications and contraindications for appropriate medication management, linked to the critical analysis of best available evidence

  • identify adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and analyse the basis of ADRs

  • analyse the rationale of medication choice in the treatment of pathological conditions and articulate why multiple drugs may be used to treat one condition

  • describe the principles of integrated care and associated models using the WHO definition and research in relation to the development of integrated care

  • recognise and describe the factors that influence the implementation of integrated care

  • identify possible strategies to enable integrated care

  • recognise and document a patient's understanding and use of health therapies in relation to a plan of care

  • demonstrate complex clinical skills and articulate associated rationales

  • analyse patient assessment data in order to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care

  • demonstrate the ability to adapt nursing practice to different practice contexts, situations and individual needs.
