Topic description
In conjunction with NURS3003, this topic uses a variety of case studies across the lifespan to stimulate students' exploration of issues and concepts associated with the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation of integrated care required for patients/clients with multiple physiological, psychological and social co-morbidities.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • increase the confidence and competence of students to make evidence-based critically reasoned decisions and solve problems

  • further develop students' ability to integrate evidence into nursing practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • articulate the rationale for all clinical skills required to care for individuals with complex healthcare needs, based on the best available evidence

  • demonstrate the ability to provide evidence when articulating rationales for care

  • incorporate evidence-based, culturally relevant and age-specific nursing interventions for chronically and acutely ill patients

  • reflect critically before, during and after planning, implementation and evaluation of the care required in the management of complex health situations

  • implement advanced communication and clinical decision-making skills

  • demonstrate an understanding of pathophysiological and pharmacological knowledge in relation to patients' present and past healthcare history.
