This professional experience topic builds upon knowledge and skills gained in the previous two years, in particular in NURS2005 Managing Care in Different Settings (PEP).

The topic focuses on the nurse as a professional, working across a range of healthcare environments and with a range of healthcare providers. Particular emphasis will be placed on the nature of 'competence' in relation to practice, both autonomously and within an interdisciplinary team. Students will identify and apply strategies that support competence development.

The aims of this topic are to:

enable students to identify and apply strategies that support development of their competence
facilitate the integration of research, knowledge and learning across a range of healthcare settings
further develop students' capacity to undertake the role of a nurse as a professional through professional practice opportunities
encourage the identification of students' own learning needs in relation to professional practice and continuing professional development across a range of healthcare facilities
consolidate the use of research to inform practice
further develop the role of students as registered nurses within an interprofessional team
consolidate students' understanding of and confidence in the use of informatics in the healthcare settings encountered in professional experience placements
consolidate students' understanding of and confidence in the use of information technology to support clinical decision-making.

On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

practise with increasing independence in accordance with the ANMC competencies
critically self-assess their level of competence in knowledge and skills and identify strategies for ongoing development
describe and discuss the cultural environment and social norms in the clinical setting and their impact on professional behaviour and development, and the use of evidence-based health care
demonstrate relevant communication skills to enable the patient/family/interprofessional team to mobilise effective coping strategies
demonstrate the use of informatics to enhance clinical decision-making and critical analysis of documented health outcomes
critique the role of the registered nurse as part of an interprofessional team
identify competing demands in clinical practice and articulate strategies for dealing with these effectively
using the best available evidence, assess, plan, implement and evaluate the healthcare needs of patients/clients and identify resources to promote their health and wellbeing
safely administer medication based on knowledge of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and of their patient
predict and recognise possible issues associated with polypharmacy and drug interactions.
