Topic description
This extended professional experience placement enables students to consolidate, synthesise and apply skills, knowledge and professional behaviour, in readiness for the role of the beginning registered nurse.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • support students to identify and implement strategies to monitor and achieve the skills, knowledge and attitudes directly related to the required NMBA competencies and the University's graduate qualities

  • prepare students to transfer skills from a student of nursing to a professional (registered nurse) role

  • prepare students to become full members of an interprofessional healthcare team

  • increase students' information literacy and fluency in the use of information and communications technology (ICT).

Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate achievement of the skills, knowledge and attitudes required in the four domains of the NMBA National competency standards for the registered nurse, specifically in:

    • professional practice

    • critical thinking and analysis

    • provision and coordination of care

    • collaborative and therapeutic practice

  • demonstrate familiarity with and confidence in using information technology to facilitate safe nursing practice

  • demonstrate they have the required knowledge and skills to be evidence-based practitioners

  • consistently use research to inform evidence-based care

  • consistently demonstrate achievement of the standards of the NMBA Code of ethics for nurses in Australia and Code of professional conduct for nurses in Australia.
