Topic description
This topic aims to provide the requisite knowledge & skills in mental health nursing practice related to major mental health issues & disorders. The student will be expected to be able to critically evaluate the effectiveness of practice strategies & link these within a framework of primary health care for clients in a variety of mental health settings. This topic integrates mental health systems of care, assessment of individual & community needs, & interventions related to care, client rights, restraint & pharmacology.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide the basic knowledge and skills in mental health nursing practice related to major mental health issues and disorders.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • describe theories of mental health and illness

  • assess the mental health issues of individuals differentiating between the diagnostic classifications

  • use assessment tools common to mental health nursing settings

  • identify the treatment needs of clients presenting with problems related to anxiety, psychosis, depression, comorbid illnesses

  • accurately calculate and adminster medication to mental health consumers
