Topic description
This topic aims to provide a recovery focused pathway that allows the student to build on their previous knowledge and skill base in Mental Health Nursing 1. Advanced interventions, involving a range of psychotherapies, family, and group work that can be applied both in a hospital and community setting will be taught.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to:

  • Introduce students to the theory and practice of therapeutic interventions particularly in relation to counselling and group work for beginning level practice in the mental health arena.

  • Critically analyse the relationship between language, communication and culture in the practices of counselling and group work in the context of mental health practice.

Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Describe the foundations, principles, techniques, and appropriate use of a range of psychotherapies and models of counselling

  • Critically analyse and discuss the therapeutic use of self in the practice of counselling and group work

  • Identify issues of racism, discrimination, sexism, power, privilege and oppression which impact the practice and policy levels of mental health counselling in a multicultural society

  • Demonstrate the skill of therapeutic boundaries in effective counselling and group work

  • Demonstrate the ability to facilitate / co facilitate individual and group work

  • Examine the importance of reflective practice in mental health nursing and describe the benefits of ongoing clinical supervision.
