Topic description
This topic explores the impact of social, economic, environmental and political factors on mental health and mental illness. Students will examine priority population groups and consider how prevention, promotion and early intervention initiatives can reduce inequities in mental health outcomes.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to examine mental health and illness from a primary health care perspective. Whilst bio-medical determinants are acknowledged, the topic will be population focussed and explore the social, economic, environmental and political factors which influence mental health outcomes
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Describe the history of the primary health care movement and the relevant World Health Organisation health promotion policy documents

  • Identify the contribution of social, political, environmental and economic factors to mental health and illness

  • Discuss the importance of intersectoral, collaborative partnerships in both the public and private sectors

  • Explain the pivotal role of consumers and carers in the planning and provision of mental health services

  • Identify primary health care and recovery philosophies, principles and strategies to practice as a mental health nurse.
