Topic description
The topic aims to provide the knowledge to understand the anatomy, physiology and pathology of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and its management. The content covers aetiology, incidence, pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of diabetes mellitus across the lifespan, principles of clinical assessment, principles of lifestyle and pharmacological management and assessment and management of acute and chronic complications of diabetes mellitus.
Educational aims
In this topic students will be introduced to the key concepts related to managing Diabetes Mellitus (DM) across the lifespan.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the aetiology, incidence, pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of diabetes mellitus across the lifespan

  • Discuss the principles of clinical assessment of diabetes mellitus including diagnostic criteria and other pathology testing

  • Describe the principles of lifestyle and pharmacological management for people with diabetes mellitus

  • Describe the assessment and management of acute and chronic complications of diabetes mellitus
