Topic description
This topic is the third topic in a diabetes course that has been accredited by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association in 2009 - 2014. The topic consists of 40 hours of clinical placement in a range of approved diabetes venues. The aim of the topic is for students to observe and participate where appropriate in the multidisciplinary management of clients with diabetes across the life span. On completion, it is anticipated that the student will be exposed to and familiar with contemporary diabetes management.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to:

  • observe the interdisciplinary nature of diabetes management in a range of health care settings
  • participate where appropriate in the care of clients
  • conduct a client teaching session (under supervision)
  • develop competence in blood glucose monitoring
  • observe the management strategies of a diabetes service
  • reflect about the clinical placement and its relationship to the diabetes health care needs of clients and its impact on personal learning
  • become familiar with the ADEA National Competencies for Diabetes Educators.

Expected learning outcomes
The objectives are to:

  • observe the role and function of the diabetes Inpatient and Outpatient Services
  • attend and participate in ward rounds and post clinic meetings
  • observe and participate under supervision with the education of client(s) with Type 1, 2 and Gestational Diabetes on a 1:1 or group session
  • observe (where possible) any of the following:
    -   the stabilisation of a client who is commencing oral glycaemic medications or insulin therapy
    -   the re-stabilisation of a patient on insulin therapy
    -   the treatment of a hypoglycaemic attack; and
    -   patient receiving crises intervention
  • observe and demonstrate (as appropriate) the principles involved in home glucose monitoring and injection techniques, ketone testing and insulin administration
  • observe the Unit Management activities of a Diabetes Centre
  • observe and then undertake under supervision an assessment of client who has been newly diagnosed
  • contribute to the Diabetes Centre, e.g. review a current teaching resource, feedback to service.
