Topic description
In this topic, students will explore core aspects of providing care in the emergency care setting. They will examine the professionalism of emergency nurses and current trends in this area. Whilst undertaking professional experience placement in the emergency care setting, students will develop their understanding of concepts which underpin emergency care nursing practice including; patient assessment in the emergency care setting, triage, trauma and disaster preparedness.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is for students to develop specialised knowledge for application in an emergency care environment
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Analyse and explain the current local and global trends affecting emergency health care

  • Articulate a critique of the principles of trauma management

  • Apply knowledge of the mechanisms of injury in trauma patients to practice

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the role of the emergency care setting across the disaster cycle

  • Synthesize and apply recognised patient assessment frameworks in the emergency care setting

  • Demonstrate critical selection and application of triage scales to patients presenting to the emergency department

  • Demonstrate advanced theoretical knowledge and skills when triaging presenting patients following a mass casualty event
