Assignment; Test; Tutorial participation

In this topic students will develop specialised knowledge of acute mental health nursing in the context of recovery within an acute mental health care setting.

The aim of this topic is to enable students to develop advanced knowledge in;

• mental health systems of care, assessment of consumer and carer needs, and recovery-based philosophies

• a range of therapeutic interventions and modalities of care

• legal issues related to care and consumer rights

On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

1. critically discuss models and theories of mental health and illness

2. demonstrate specialised knowledge of mental health issues that impact individuals and be able to differentiate between diagnostic classifications

3. justify the use of assessment tools common to acute mental health settings

4. appraise current biomedical philosophies in relation to contemporary recovery- oriented practice

5. evaluate the efficacy of a range of therapeutic interventions for individuals with acute and/or complex mental health problems

6. identify and explain the legal and ethical issues that pertain to acute mental health nursing

7. critically analyse the contribution of carers to person-centred recovery
