Topic description
In this topic students will explore contemporary issues facing the health and wellbeing of children and their families. In particular they will address the nexus between the community, home and hospital. Physiological and pyscho-social development will be critiqued in relation to the prevention and management of chronic conditions. Particular attention will be given to children who experience social and environmental vulnerabilities.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is for students to develop advanced knowledge in a range of critical issues facing the health and wellbeing of children, young people and their families in contemporary society.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • contextualise care for children and young people in relation to the socioeconomic and environmental vulnerabilities that they face

  • explore and articulate the nexus between the community, home and hospital for children and young people who experience a range of episodic health interventions

  • appraise current strategies for prevention and management of chronic or life threatening illness or injury

  • critique current physiological and psychosocial strategies for maintaining health and wellbeing for children and young people
