Topic description
This topic provides students with the theoretical underpinnings of evidence-based practice contextualised in the student's clinical specialty. The content explores the processes of evidence-based practice, the notion of different levels of evidence, the skills required to locate evidence and the critical understanding of evaluating evidence in order to inform clinical decision-making. Students will be introduced to basic concepts of research design and biostatistics as they apply to analysis of evidence.
Educational aims
This topic aims to enable students to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to effectively apply evidence-based practice to the clinical environment.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be expected to be able to:

  • integrate and apply the interdisciplinary skills and knowledge that are required to participate effectively in the planning, implementation and management of health care programs and services.

  • acquire research skills and apply these to the resolution and improvement of health outcomes for consumers of clinical and community nursing/midwifery practice.
