Topic description
Healthcare professionals require an understanding of leadership in order to function effectively in a complex healthcare sector and fulfil significant leadership roles. This topic will enable students to develop knowledge of contemporary leadership theories and engage them in debate and critique about their current and future roles as leaders in the country in which they work. It will make the distinction between leadership and management and encourage students to identify their own leadership style and their leadership role and into the future.
Educational aims
This aim of this topic is for students to engage with contemporary leadership theories and the way in which they can be applied in nursing and midwifery in the various health contexts in Australia and other countries.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • describe, explain and critique the differences between leadership and management as they apply to nursing/midwifery

  • explain what leadership is and what it is not

  • critique the literature on contemporary leadership

  • describe leadership for contemporary nursing/midwifery, taking account of their cultural beliefs and experiences

  • apply contemporary leadership theories to nursing/midwifery practice
