Topic description
This topic focuses on the use of diagnostic procedures as aids to comprehensive clinical assessment for nurses, midwives and paramedics preparing for advanced practice. Students will learn how to use diagnostic aids in comprehensive client/patient assessments in order to support the formulation a diagnosis and to plan care.
Educational aims
By the end of this topic students will be able to order, analyse and apply diagnostic procedures to support their assessment and management of patients and clients.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be expected to be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge about the types of diagnostics used in the student's context of practice.

  • Apply diagnostics to their practice.

  • Articulate the nursing, midwifery and paramedic responsibilities in requesting diagnostic procedures.

  • Articulate the legal and professional boundaries relating to the inclusion of diagnostics in daily advanced practice.

  • Develop interprofessional relationships in requesting diagnostic procedures in practice.

  • Develop clinical practice guidelines for legal, ethical, organisational and clinical support for practice.
