Topic description
In this topic students will develop specialised knowledge of the use of a range of individual and group counselling models, including knowledge of counselling tools to support their practice in a variety of mental health settings.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to enable students is to develop advanced knowledge of:

  • theories that underpin counselling and group work in mental health nursing

  • the relationship between language, communication and culture in the practices of counselling and group work in the context of mental health nursing.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to;

  • Critically examine the theoretical orientation and foundation of a range of psychotherapies and models of counselling.

  • Discuss appropriate therapeutic interventions to effectively deliver counselling and group work in a mental health setting.

  • Explore the core principles related to individual and group work when working with individuals who experience mental health issues.

  • Debate the issues of ethical, racial, cultural, religious and gender sensitivity in counselling and group work.

  • Articulate the importance of reflective practice in mental health nursing and understand the benefits of ongoing clinical supervision

  • Investigate potential challenges of individual and group work counselling when working in mental health nursing.

  • Describe a range of counselling tools to enhance understanding and practice of counselling.
