Topic description
This topic involves supervised individual reading and research in the area of nursing and its contributing disciplines. The work is to be reported in a research project report of approximately 18,000 words which shall be examined by two examiners, one of whom shall be external to Flinders University. Previous coursework topics have provided preliminary preparation (literature review and draft proposal) for the project. The research project shall demonstrate: a substantial analysis of a problem; small scale research project; a thorough understanding of the research methodology employed.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide an opportunity for nurses and midwives to develop a working appreciation of research practices and of the knowledge bases and skills necessary to conduct a study in an area of the student's interest, with the assistance of a supervisor

  • prepare successful graduates for research practice and utilisation in health care settings, and/or higher degree research studies. Admission to a PhD program is usually restricted to applicants with a grade point average of Distinction, and a thesis of 18 units or more, or equivalent (equivalence is usually judged on research practice and publications in referred journals)

  • encourage and support students to write for publication.

Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • effectively use time to achieve their research goals

  • develop and refine relevant research questions or foci for project (in an appropriate time frame)

  • develop a logical plan for the management of a research project that is feasible, achievable, and cost effective within the given timeframe

  • conduct an extensive search of the literature and critically review the relevant literature

  • select methodology and methods that are most appropriate to answering the research question, and provide a well reasoned rationale

  • discern and understand any ethical considerations related to the study and appropriately address them in a timely manner

  • prepare application for ethics approval from the relevant committees

  • develop relevant tools/strategies to gather, store, retrieve, analyse data and defend the conclusions

  • construct a thesis sensitive to the nuances of selected methodological incorporating all learning outcomes.
