Topic description
This topic introduces students to epidemiological concepts, their use and application to their own practice.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to introduce students to epidemiological concepts, their use and application to their own practice. As a result of this topic, students will be able to critically analyse epidemiological studies and be able to apply this knowledge to their practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be expected to be able to:

  • articulate the value of epidemiological studies in health care practice

  • differentiate the types of epidemiological studies and explain the advantages and disadvantages associated with each approach

  • understand, interpret and critique epidemiological studies

  • differentiate between epidemiological concepts of risk and contrast these with a lay person's understanding of the risk of the occurrence of negative health events

  • apply knowledge gained from epidemiological studies to their own practice.
