Topic description
This topic will focus on policies relevant to aged care which impact on the professional, organisational and political context of aged care nursing practice. The topic aims to provide opportunities for students to examine and critique both global and local issues of ageing. In a supportive but self-directed, flexible learning environment, students will be encouraged to explore, question, discuss and debate the challenges they face as registered nurses on both a micro and macro level.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are that the participants will be able to:

  • Identify and critically discuss the emerging directions for aged care policy and the impact of the changing social context on policy eg demographics, healthy ageing, increasing reliance on community care, from a national and international ageing and aged care context.

  • Analyse and critique policies and legislation relevant to the aged care industry

  • Understand and debate the policy related to management, continuous quality improvement and risk management approaches as they relate to community and residential aged care.

  • Have an understanding of the legal and government requirements for aged care, nationally and internationally and their applicability to nursingpractice.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  • examine and critique both global and local issues of ageing

  • identify, discuss and critique public policy that impacts on the older person and the aged care industry both nationally and internationally

  • develop their ability to critically analyse issues the impact of regulatory policy related to the older person and aged care on the role of the registered nurse
