Topic description
In this topic students will extend their nursing assessment skills in both physical assessment and history taking across the lifespan. The students will be introduced to advanced nursing skills in physical and health assessment and the relationship between health assessment, nursing assessment, documentation and quality outcomes across any clinical setting.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to develop a positive approach by nurses to advanced nursing assessment skills across the lifespan and in any clinical setting. Students will study advanced physical assessment and interviewing techniques in order to comprehensively assess the health status of the client. This will provide the student with advanced skills in order to critically analyses the client's health information in order to determine best practice outcomes.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding and critical analysis of the principles of health assessment

  • articulate an increased knowledge base regarding advanced nursing assessment within their practice setting

  • demonstrate highly developed communications skills in their context of practice in health assessment

  • explain cultural sensitivity and safety for clients undergoing a health interview and physical assessment

  • apply the social determinants of health and how they impact on the life and decision making of clients

  • coherently document findings of a comprehensive health assessment

  • independence in undertaking health assessment

  • articulate the ethical parameters of health assessment

  • collaboratively work with other members of the healthcare team

  • demonstrate the advanced nursing skills and knowledge to undertake a physical and psycho-social assessment of clients
