Students must have completed all topics in semester 1 of BND Year 3 to commence this topic.

This topic builds on the Semester 1 topic "The Nutrition Care Process" (NUTD3103) and continues the provision of the theoretical knowledge that forms the foundation of safe and effective clinical nutrition and dietetic practice. The topic explores the pathophysiology, clinical features and the medical management of the common clinical conditions in adults and paediatric patients, where dietetic intervention is important. The main focus will be to understand the relevance and principles of clinical nutrition care in the management of a range of clinical conditions. Students will apply and translate the clinical nutrition theory into the nutrition care of patients using case studies.

The aim of this topic is to:

• Provide students with an understanding of the rationale and principles of clinical nutrition care as an intervention to assist in the management of a range of paediatric and adult clinical conditions

• Develop advanced skills in the application of the Nutrition Care Process introduced in the Semester 1 topic "The Nutrition Care Process".

• Enable students to interpret and translate the scientific principles of clinical nutrition into practical information to influence food intake and eating behaviour.

On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

• Demonstrate a knowledge of the pathophysiology, clinical features and relevant medical management of common clinical conditions in paediatric and adult clients where dietetic intervention is important.

• Give the scientific rationale and principles of the clinical nutrition care in a range of paediatric and adult clinical conditions and apply this knowledge to manage clients with the relevant clinical conditions.

• Demonstrate clinical reasoning in the application and documentation of the Nutrition Care Process (assessment, implementation, evaluation and documentation) that underpins safe and effective dietetic practice.

• Demonstrate a knowledge of nutritional and food products available in Australia, which can be used in the management of specific clinical conditions.
