Introduces students to the occupational therapy profession including the development of the profession, scope of current occupational therapy practice, the professional framework in Australia and the philosophical, ethical and theoretical basis for practice. A field placement will provide a concentrated orientation to professional practice.

The aim of this topic is to introduce and orientate students to the profession of occupational therapy.

At the completion of this topic students will be able to:

• define occupation and describe its relationship to health at a beginning level

• describe the key elements of the occupational therapy process and apply this to a case study

• define and use key terms in occupational therapy

• describe the development, organization, typical work environments and scope of practice for the profession in Australia

• identify at a beginning level the underlying philosophical, theoretical and ethical base for the profession.
