Assignment(s); Tutorial participation and presentation; Students will be expected to attend all sessions. Attendance rate of 90% required.
Topic description
This topic provides students with an opportunity to examine, reflect and discuss key contemporary issues within occupational therapy. Specific content will include analysing and comparing professional models; examining emerging and evolving areas of practice and the implications of these in terms of professional identity, ethics and competency; professional accountability including using evidence in practice and generating evidence from practice; specialisation and how it may evolve within the profession; future trends that are likely to shape the profession over the next two decades and particularly the ways in which cutting-edge technology can be included in assessment and intervention or may evolve in the future.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to examine, debate and reflect on contemporary occupational therapy issues and future professional directions
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

  • Analyse and compare key contemporary practice models

  • Identify emerging practice areas and professional issues associated with these

  • Discuss the challenges of professional accountability and identify strategies to facilitate accountability including practice-based evidence and professional development

  • Identify healthcare and societal trends impacting upon the practice of occupational therapy including the use of technology and the likely trends that will continue to shape the profession over the next 20 years.
