Topic description
This topic provides a structured opportunity for students to reflect upon their own palliative care practice and identify an area for specific attention and review, in order to extend their professional development and enhance client services or patient care. Students negotiate a contract with their supervisor that is based on their current practice, to consider this in the context of current theory and best practice.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with the opportunity to reflect on their own palliative practice. This requires the student to:

  • identify area of clinical interest

  • identify, extend and evaluate personal professional skill development required

  • to contribute new information or perspectives to current thinking in a related area of practice

  • engage in professional discourse by completing to submission stage an item for publication or presentation in an appropriate professional forum
In order to achieve this aim, students will be given the opportunity to develop skills in reflective practice, critical appraisal, writing for publication and clinical skill development.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • undertake critical analysis, reflection and interpretation of the student's own practice with a view to identifying a specific area of clinical interest.

  • reflect on and evaluate the process of skill development

  • critically appraise the literature in the area of interest.

  • describe and practice the skills necessary to prepare a paper for dissemination (publication or presentation)

  • plan and manage the progression of a practicum
