It is designed to develop students' skills in research planning, methodology, evaluation and dissemination of project findings through an in-depth study of an area of personal professional interest. Students will extend their capabilities in critically reviewing study designs and the scientific literature by writing a critical review, developing ethics and grant proposals, analysis of data and submission of paper in publishable form, or presentation in a professional forum.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with an opportunity to:

  • Build on research methods knowledge gained from core research methods topics.

  • Develop the skills required to articulate a research question of relevance to the student's area of practice and to formulate a research study design appropriate to answer a specific research question.

  • Develop the skills required to implement, evaluate and report on results of a research study of relevance to the student's area of practice.

Expected learning outcomes
Students will demonstrate:

  • an understanding of research methodology.

  • an understanding of the process of ethical approval for human research.

  • the ability to gather relevant background information, identify gaps, strengths and limitations of current research and design an appropriate study to evaluate the research question.

  • the ability to implement and evaluate a research study of relevance to the student's field of practice.

  • knowledge and skills in the processes of disseminating the results of this study via publication in the professional literature or other professional fora.
