This topic is predominantly practical based and designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop the fundamental clinical skills of paramedic practice. Students will develop their ability to manage a patient in cardiac arrest at Advanced Life Support (ALS) level, including post-resuscitation care, understanding and justifying their actions according to current best-practice.

Paramedics are often required to provide clinical interventions within high pressure environments and their ability to function is greatly assisted by the mastery of individual skills. Our aim in this topic is to provide the clinical reasoning behind various clinical interventions and provide an opportunity for students to learn and master these skills individually. The overall goal is for the student to integrate these skills to effectively manage an adult cardiac arrest at an Advanced Life Support (ALS) level.

At the completion of this topic, it is intended that the participants will be able to:

Demonstrate awareness of challenges of industry placements and show ability to participate safely whilst undertaking Work-Integrated-Learning.
Demonstrate effective and appropriate communication with integrated health care professionals, patients and family members.
Demonstrate understanding of theory in practice by concurrently managing a patient in cardiac arrest and assessing reversible causes to effectively treat patients.
Demonstrate competency in a number of advanced Paramedic skills.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of current best practice in resuscitation.
Demonstrate competency in safe management and treatment of a patient in cardiac arrest at an Advanced Life Support level, including the management of the post-cardiac arrest patient.
