Topic description
Paramedic practice requires a general understanding of disease processes to enable effective management of patients presenting with a broad range of conditions. This topic will extend the specialist knowledge of disease-states established in PARA2000 and PARA2001 and provide students with the theoretical platform required to recognise and manage a variety of clinical conditions relevant to pre-hospital patient care.
Educational aims
This topic will explore both emergency and non-emergency conditions presenting in the pre-hospital environment through a discussion of the cause, pathophysiology, manifestations and treatment of underlying disorders. The topic is divided into the following modules:

  • Endocrine disorders

  • Disorders of the gastrointestinal system

  • Disorders of the genitourinary and renal systems

  • Pathologies and trauma of the musculoskeletal system

  • Toxicology and toxinology

  • Advanced vascular and perfusion problems.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • Apply an integrated understanding of the anatomy and physiology of body systems to paramedic practice;

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis and pre-hospital management of patients with gastrointestinal-related conditions;

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis and pre-hospital management of patients with genitourinary and renal-related conditions;

  • Demonstrate an understanding of diseases and trauma affecting the musculoskeletal system relevant to pre-hospital patient care;

  • Apply an understanding of endocrine pathophysiology to provide effective management and support for patients with diabetes and other endocrine emergencies;

  • Apply an understanding of toxicology and toxinology to provide effective management of the poisoned patient;

  • Demonstrate an understanding of vascular pathophysiologies and their impact on tissue perfusion;

  • Apply an advanced understanding of tissue perfusion to provide effective management and support for the patient in shock; and

  • Demonstrate skills in communicating relevant information to others.
