This topic is designed for the integration of the theoretical subjects of the Bachelor of Paramedic Science to paramedic practice by using clinical simulation and online teaching resources. With an enhanced focus on developing critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills, students will be able to prioritise clinical care through authentic learning opportunities and experiential learning provided. The proficiency of health professionals lies in their ability to work together to observe, recognise, discriminate and interpret clinical evidence in order to reach a judgement about the patients' health status and provide appropriate care.

This topic aims to:

• demonstrate integration of theory to paramedic practice for a variety of medical and traumatic emergencies and management of injury and illness.

• develop physical examination techniques in relation to common medical and traumatic emergencies and to apply these in a pre-hospital context.

• demonstrate safe and effective critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills in a pre-hospital care context.

• demonstrate competency in extrapolating components of medical and trauma related clinical scenarios in order to compare and contrast findings with current Australian Resuscitation Council and international guidelines.

• demonstrate sound pharmacological knowledge of medications used in a pre-hospital care context.

At the completion of this topic, it is intended that the participants will be able to:

• develop appropriate physical examination skills when examining patients with a variety of injuries or illnesses.

• derive and apply knowledge, understanding and management of the patient who is experiencing a medical or traumatic emergency.

• demonstrate appropriate interpretation of clinical features and history of a patient who is suffering from a medical or traumatic emergency.

• demonstrate appropriate pre-hospital care to patients with medical and traumatic emergencies.

• demonstrate safe working practices in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation.

• demonstrate proficiency in the provision of Advanced Life Support
