Topic description
Paramedic practice requires a generalist approach to all types of people, including children, the elderly and women during pregnancy. This topic explores pathophysiological processes in these three distinct life phases. Students will examine the types of illnesses which specifically affect these groups or have more significant health outcomes in these groups. An emphasis is placed on assessment and diagnosis of acute illness or acute exacerbation of chronic illness and the immediate management of these health problems.
Educational aims
This topic aims to explore:

  1. Disease processes and traumas affecting the health of paediatric patients

  2. Illness and complexities that occur during pregnancy and childbirth

  3. Aged related changes and illness trajectories in the elderly

Learning from previous studies within the degree will be applied into these three life-span related patient groups, with a focus on the unique responses of these patients. Skills and knowledge required for the assessment, diagnosis and care of these population groups in the out-of-hospital setting is a major focus of the topic.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, it is intended that the participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the aetiology, pathophysiology, presentation and management of a child with

    a. Altered cardiovascular status

    b. Respiratory compromise

    c. Altered conscious states or behaviour abnormalities

  2. Discuss current issues of resuscitation of paediatric and neonate patients

  3. Describe the mandatory obligation regarding child protection and outline the signs and symptoms which suggest child abuse

  4. Describe the pathophysiology and presentation of emergencies which may occur during pregnancy

  5. Demonstrate the care of a mother and neonate during childbirth

  6. Describe major complications of childbirth and demonstrate care strategies and clinical decisions required to manage these complications in the out of hospital setting

  7. Describe normal aged related changes and common illness trajectories seen in the aged person

  8. Describe the signs of poor coping and identify strategies and resources to support the health of the elderly

  9. Discuss the aetiology and consequences of

  10. a. Falls and fractures

    b. Dementia, depression and other mental state disorders

    c. Skin disorders, skin tears and pressure areas
