Research methodology

This topic provides an opportunity to undertake independent scientific research or a practice-related project, with a focus on health care practices relevant to the extended scope of practice paramedic. The topic is designed to develop students' skills in research planning, methodology, evaluation and dissemination of project findings through an in-depth study of an area of personal professional interest. Project work shall demonstrate a substantial analysis of a problem identified in practice and a thorough understanding of the research methodology employed. The work is to be reported in a dissertation and an oral presentation.

The topic aims to provide students with the skills necessary to produce evidence that may inform clinical practice. It will provide students with an opportunity to plan and implement an independent research project in the area of industrial paramedic practice or extended care paramedic practice. Students will explore of the principles which inform scientific research design and ethics. The topic will assist students in interpreting findings of their research and develop skills in scientific writing and presentation.

On completion of this topic students will be expected to be able to:

• In collaboration with a supervisor, negotiate a research study or practice-related project relevant to the student’s practice setting

• Formulate a research proposal that is relevant, effective and achievable within the given timeframe

• Where appropriate, prepare an ethics proposal in line with recommended research on human subjects

• Critically review the published literature and research reports in the area of interest

• Develop a study protocol, which will effectively collect and analyse data

• Interpret research findings and describe significance to the discipline

• Effectively communicate the research in the form of a written research dissertation and an oral presentation
