Topic description
This is an introductory public health topic for undergraduate students who intend to work in any health or community-related field. Students will look at current public health issues including alcohol consumption, obesity, drug use and sexual health. Media coverage of these issues and related controversies will be examined. All these issues are studied in the context of the social determinants of health and well-being and debates about behaviour change.
Educational aims
The aim of this foundation topic is to build an understanding of public health. Specifically it provides a grounding in approaches to public health, contemporary issues and controversies in public health and public health practice.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of this topic students will be expected to be able to:

  • Understand different approaches to tackling public health issues

  • Identify public health issues in the media

  • Explain the basis for debate on public health issues

  • Clearly communicate the impact of social determinants on health and well being

  • Recognise the challenges common to public health practice.
