Topic description
This topic examines the social construction of health problems and the ways in which public policy is a result of the definition and representation of social problems. This challenges assumptions that public policy is a result of rational problem-solving and objective decision-making. It will look at policies themselves: they way in which they are typically developed and analysed and enablers and barriers to implementation. The topic focuses on critical appraisals of examples of public health policies and the role of research in their development.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to develop students' skills in synthesizing public health research, policy and practice through a critical appraisal of examples of policy development and allocation of resources to address health inequalities.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of this topic students will be able to:

  • Analyse how public health problems are presented

  • Identify issues impacting on the development of public health policy

  • Carry out an advanced analysis of a public health policy
