Topic description
This topic is available to students enrolled in other graduate awards with the approval of the course coordinator MPH.

The topic is designed to enhance awareness and understanding of ways in which social determinants influence Indigenous peoples' health. It does this by introducing social determinants which inmpact on Indigenous peoples' health, discussing models and processes of social determinants and exploring key social determinants.
Educational aims
The primary aims of this topic are to enable you to:

  • increase your understanding of the impact of social determinants on the health of Indigenous Australians.

  • apply the current state of knowledge about the relationship between social determinants and health to improving Indigenous peoples' health.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, you should be able to:

  • Understand the critical concepts relating to the social determinants of health

  • Analyse and apply current models and frameworks used to explain the social determinants of health

  • Understand the role of Australian history in contemporary Australian Indigenous peoples' disadvantage and physical and mental health

  • Appreciate Indigenous peoples' understandings of health and place

  • Describe current theories linking income inequality and health and define measures of socioeconomic status

  • Understand the importance of housing as a determinant of health

  • Understand the role of social networks, links and support and how they influence health

  • Define the characteristics of racism and its effects on health

  • Describe the impacts of education and employment on health and the role of economic development

  • Describe social interventions, their implementation and critical success factors
