Topic description
It is now widely recognised that up to 50% of the burden of cancer could be potentially eliminated by appropriate population lifestyle change. This topic will introduce different techniques for behaviour change including education, social influence, and motivational interviewing and the theoretical models that underlie health behaviour. The extent to which these models have utility within the public health context will be critically discussed.
Educational aims
To introduce the potential benefit of lifestyle change for cancer prevention approaches to behaviour change and models of health behaviour
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students should be able to:

  • Communicate effectively about the rationale for cancer prevention and describe a range of behavioural approaches to the prevention of cancer and other chronic diseases

  • Determine the applicability of various health models for cancer prevention
