Prerequisites
1 Admission into MPT-Master of Physiotherapy
1a Admission into BHSMPT-Bachelor of Health Sciences, Master of Physiotherapy
1b Admission into MPHYC-Bachelor of Health Sciences, Master of Physiotherapy
Must Satisfy: ((1 or 1a or 1b))
Assumed knowledge
The Master of Physiotherapy has a number of pre-requisites for admission, and students must demonstrate a level of academic achievement in the areas of Physiology, Anatomy, Communication, Research Methods, and Social Perspectives in Health before being admitted to the course. These admission requirements form the basis of all assumed knowledge in the course.
Assessment
Practical Examination (40%); Written Examination (60%)
Topic description
In this topic students will gain knowledge of rheumatologic and orthopaedic conditions as they relate to physiotherapy practice. Clinical case studies will be used to integrate knowledge of the disease process and enhance clinical reasoning for treatment interventions. Physiotherapy rehabilitation skills will include acute care management, soft tissue massage, relevant electrophysical agents, gait re-education using walking aids and exercise therapy. Students will learn to apply interventions in an evidence based manner.
Educational aims
The aim of the Master of Physiotherapy is to prepare students with degrees in health sciences to register and practice as physiotherapists in Australia. The aim of this topic is to teach the physiotherapy management of orthopaedic and rheumatologic conditions in a biopsychosocial context using a problem-based learning approach.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of normal movement performance to simple case scenarios related to people with selected orthopaedic and rheumatologic conditions

  • Demonstrate physiotherapy management of an acute orthopaedic patient

  • Demonstrate the application of physiotherapy assessment and treatment of common orthopaedic and rheumatologic conditions using case-based learning

  • Assess and prescribe walking aids to assist gait and re-educate gait patterns in patients using case studies of patients in acute rehabilitation setting.

  • Apply physiotherapy interventions safely and effectively using well-developed clinical reasoning, knowledge of pain mechanism and injury/healing physiology and/or evidence based practice

  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the physical parameters of selected electro physical agents (EPA), identify safe and unsafe practice for EPAs, articulate the Australian standards relevant to therapeutic use of EPA and select and perform EPA appropriate to a specific condition.
