Topic description
The learning focus of Clinical placement 3 is cardiorespiratory physiotherapy. Settings can be hospital and or community based practice. The student is expected to be able to demonstrate competency in: patient assessment, clinical decision making and in physiotherapy program planning, and implementation and evaluation of patients with a range of cardiothoracic cases presenting with a primary respiratory problem or conditions that have a secondary impact on the cardiorespiratory system.

The learning focus of Clinical Placement 4 is neurological physiotherapy and rehabilitation. The student is expected to be able to demonstrate competency in patient assessment, clinical decision making and in physiotherapy program planning, implementation and evaluation of patients with a range of neurological disorders across lifespan, acute as well as chronic. This will include patients in urban or rural hospital (e.g. rehabilitation wards, outpatients) or community based practice, private practice, schools or early intervention centres.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to establish specific knowledge and skills related to physiotherapy for cardiorespiratory conditions and for neurological conditions.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be able to;

For cardiorespiratory physiotherapy (clinical placement 3)

  • Apply knowledge of normal respiratory anatomy and physiology.

  • Apply knowledge of selected pathologies affecting the cardiorespiratory system in humans and their clinical presentations

  • Demonstrate knowledge of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy including an ability to integrate prior learning in exercise science, anatomy and physiology with clinical presentations

  • Plan and perform a complete cardiorespiratory assessment of the client

  • Plan and perform a complete assessment, treatment and evaluation of a client with a vascular condition

  • Interpret and analyse assessment findings to develop and implement a safe, evidence-based intervention for clients with a cardiorespiratory condition.

  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and make modifications to treatment plans as necessary in consultation with the client

  • Demonstrate an understanding of outcome measures used in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, including their reliability and validity

  • Understand the role of the physiotherapist and other health care providers involved in the patient centred and holistic management of a clients

  • Demonstrate an ability to reflect on own practice.

For neurological physiotherapy (clinical placement 4)

  • Apply knowledge of neurological pathologies

  • Apply a working knowledge of evidence-based neurological physiotherapy including an ability to integrate exercise science, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with clinical presentations

  • Plan and perform neurological assessment of the client

  • Interpret and analyse assessment findings to develop and implement a safe, evidence-based intervention in consultation with the client

  • Be able to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and make modifications as needed

  • Evaluate outcomes of management interventions by the appropriate selection of tests and standardised outcome measures used in neurological rehabilitation, including their reliability and validity

  • Recognise the importance of interprofessional working, and the role of the physiotherapist and other health care providers in patient-centred holistic management in the field of neurological rehabilitation

  • Teach, educate and advise clients, carers and other members of the health care team in all aspects of the physiotherapy management program.
