Assessment
Assignment; Clinical Placement
Topic description
Physiotherapy Clinical Practice provides the foundation knowledge and skills of preparation for clinical practice in physiotherapy including manual handling, infection control, documentation, clinical reasoning, safety procedures, professional issues and communication. Theory and practical skills covered in lectures and practicals, will be consolidated in a one week intensive workshop (clinical simulation) followed closely by a five week clinical placement.
Educational aims
The overall aim of the Topic is to prepare students for clinical practice.

Specific aims of the clinical placement preparation sessions include: gaining knowledge and skills in manual tasks; therapeutic handling and basic mobility risk assessment; medical record documentation; risk management and professional behaviour.

Simulation-based training will aim to provide the opportunity to refine knowledge and skills and to gain confidence and competence in patient management.

The five week clinical placement encompasses musculoskeletal and/or cardiorespiratory physiotherapy practice with an emphasis on non-complex disorders. The student is expected to manage patients (assess, interpret, plan, implement and evaluate interventions using a demonstrated and sound clinical reasoning process), in collaboration with the patient. Knowledge and skills are consolidated in the clinical placement, providing the opportunity to analyse, evaluate and refine effective physiotherapy skills attained in the course to date.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills of clinical practice including risk assessment, manual handling and documentation

  • Demonstrate professional behaviour including workplace health and safety requirements in a clinical setting in accordance with ethical and legal regulatory requirements

  • Demonstrate safe and effective physiotherapy patient assessment and management whilst on clinical placement

  • Demonstrate an ability to take responsibility for their own actions and develop the characteristics of self-directed and reflective learners

  • Demonstrate the ability to manage own schedule and work efficiently

  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills which are sensitive to age, level of understanding and cultural differences and meet medico-legal requirements and accepted procedures and standards

  • Demonstrate the ability to access, gather, interpret and apply information to continuously improve

  • Understand the role of the physiotherapist and other health care providers involved in patient centred and holistic management of a client and be able to work effectively in a health care team.
