Topic description
This topic will cover:
- Academic reading, academic writing, essay writing and planning
- Pronunciation, speaking, debate, presentation skills, listening and note-taking
- Study Skills, paraphrasing, grammar and error correction
Educational aims
The topic aims to introduce the student to the main ideas of academic writing and speaking. This will include work on grammatical accuracy and pronunciation as well as the research of and construction of a variety of types of essays. Attention will also be paid to listening and note taking.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic it is expected that the student will have foundational knowledge of:
- English sentence structure
- Types of academic writing and the structures used to create them.
- Research methods for academic writing and speaking
- How to give a presentation in English
- How to take notes from a listening in English
