This topic focuses on a number of core questions relating to the causes and consequences of changes in population growth, migration, fertility, and mortality and population structure. The major theories advanced to explain these demographic changes are critically examined and related to wider economic and social change. There is an approximately equal division of attention between major issues relating more specifically to developing countries and those relating to industrialised societies. A section of the topic is devoted to a consideration of population policies and population-development issues and some advanced methods of demographic analysis with respect to population movement.

This topic provides students with an understanding of the core questions relating to the causes and consequences of changes in population size and growth, fertility, mortality, migration and population structure
The major theories advanced to explain these demographic changes are critically examined and related to wider economic and social change
Sections of the topic are devoted to a consideration of population data sources and the measures of demographic parameters
The topic also provides students with a critical understanding of population policies, population-development, population-environment, gender-development and ageing issues
The topic covers the major issues relating to both developing and developed countries

At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

Understand the mechanism of population change and the components thereof
Be conversant with the theories of population change in developed and developing countries and the basic measures and data sources of demographic parameters
Critically understand the role of population in development, environment, gender and ageing and the need and formulation of population policies
