Topic description
Students will undertake a small research project on some aspects of population studies, and produce a research paper of about 5,000 words under the supervision of a member of staff. The project may involve the analysis of primary or secondary data, or a critical study and evaluation of the literature on a specific topic or problem.
Educational aims
To provide students with the opportunity to undertake a small research project on an aspect of population studies under the supervision of a member of academic staff assigned by the topic coordinator and produce a research paper of about 5,000 words. The research will involve the identification of a specific research problem and may be carried out by analysing primary or secondary data or a critical study and evaluation of the literature on the research problem.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Identify a small research problem and prepare a proposal outlining the objectives/hypothesis and methodology to carry out the research
  2. Collect and analyse the information (primary or secondary data or relevant literature)
  3. Write a research paper
