Topic description
The topic covers the major conceptual and measurement issues related to population movement in developing and developed societies. It deals with the major theories of population movement, and its causes and consequences for social and economic change. Finally, the topic includes a consideration of planning and policy issues related to population movement, especially in developing countries. It is intended that the topic should complement the more theoretical approach taken in the other core topics in the Applied Population Studies program.
Educational aims
The topic aims to give students a knowledge of the major conceptual and measurement issues related to population movement in developing and developed societies; the major theories of population movement and its causes and consequences for social and economic change; and the planning and policy issues related to population movement, especially in developing countries.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to understand:

  1. The major concepts of population movement in developing and developed societies and the issues in measuring such movement
  2. The major theories of population movement and the causes and consequences of such movement for social and economic change
  3. Planning and policy issues related to population movement, especially in developing countries
