Topic description
This topic provides an examination of human resource development issues and planning with special reference to the developing regions of the world including analysis of labour force and labour markets in developing countries. It also provides an overview of analysis and issues, and deals with selected case studies in developing countries.
Educational aims
The topic aims to provide an examination of human resource development issues with special reference labour force analysis in the developing regions of the world. The topic will include analysis of labour force in developing countries.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Explain the concept of human resources and of the central role of human resource development in economic development, poverty alleviation and in improvement of personal welfare, health, education, productivity and economic self sufficiency
  2. Discuss the major concepts of labour force analysis
  3. Be familiar with the major determinants of labour supply and demand
  4. Show an understanding of the patterns of labour demand and supply in LDCs, labour productivity, labour market disequilibrium and unemployment
  5. Be familiar with the concept of the urban informal or micro-enterprise sector and discuss issues of labour absorption in LDCs
