Psychology is the scientific study of (mainly human) behaviour and thinking. Psychological knowledge has been (and is still being) accumulated by a process of making observations to answer questions.

In this topic we cover the basics of this process. Specifically, we will look at how psychologists:

• decide what questions to ask
• go about making observations to answer a question
• interpret what they've observed to provide a sound answer to a question

In more technical terms, we will cover:

• scientific theories and hypotheses
• psychological measurement and research design
• (very basic) data analysis and interpretation

This topic aims to:

• increase understanding and appreciation of how human behaviour can be investigated scientifically and the methods used to do so
• enable learning and practice of skills that are required for the conduct of scientific research
• improve analytical and interpretive skills
• enable students to become critical consumers of psychological research

Students successfully completing this topic will be able to:

• Identify and generate valid scientific theories and hypotheses
• Identify basic research designs
• Plan basic research studies, for each of the different types of design
• Interpret data from each of the different types of basic research design
