This topic assumes a basic knowledge of psychological principles at First Year level.

Psychology major: Bachelor of Psychology (Honours), Bachelor of Psychological Studies (Graduate Entry), Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology), Bachelor of Psychological Science, Bachelor of Arts.

This topic builds upon information about human development mastered in First Year Psychology. It will extend students' understanding of developmental changes in a number of domains of human functioning and of key theories in developmental psychology. In particular, it will address biological, social, linguistic and cognitive development. Other topics that may be discussed include, but are not limited to, atypical patterns of development and research designs for the study of human development. A topical, rather than a chronological approach is adopted. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on the ethical considerations that are relevant to research on human development, and to collect and analyse data concerning human development. There will be a final examination.

This topic is designed to provide students with an introduction to the broad field of human development. It is intended that students will complete the topic with an enhanced appreciation of some of developmental changes, some of the key theories about human development, and the special ethical considerations involved in research on human development. In addition, the topic aims to provide students with hands-on experience to improve their skills in collecting systematic information about human development and in analysing and interpreting this information.

On successful completion of the topic, students should be able to:

• appropriately apply ethical principles to research on human development
• show a critical understanding of some theories concerning human development
• demonstrate knowledge of some factors that influence the pace and/or course of development
• be able to collect, analyse and interpret particular information about human development
