Students are required to successfully complete this topic prior to commencing a child placement that involves psychological assessments.

This topic will serve as an introduction to the role of the psychologist in assessing children from 0-18 years, in clinical psychology settings. An understanding of normal child development is expected as a prerequisite. The focus of this topic is upon assessment of the problems of children and families and the formulation of data-driven hypotheses which lay the foundations for intervention. The main theoretical framework of relevance will be the Cattell-Horn-Carroll theory of intelligence. An introduction is provided to various assessment tools (WISC, WJ-111, WIAT-11, CMS, CBCL), as well as the clinical interviewing of children and families.

The aims of the topic are to increase students' knowledge of intelligence theory, and the range of psychological assessment batteries that can be used in clinical practice, as well as to develop students' skills in the administration, scoring, interpretation and reporting of psychological assessments.

On successful completion of this topic, students will be competent in:

• the administration, scoring, and interpretation of psychological assessments for children and adolescents, and
• associated psychological report writing.
