Topic description
The topic addresses the principles and application of exercise therapy by following the journeys of three different individuals with different diagnoses (Multiple Sclerosis, Osteoathritis, Stroke) through phases of their rehabilitation: acute management, early transition to rehabilitation, in-patient rehabilitation, community integration and lifelong management issues.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide an opportunity for students to increase and apply their understanding of the key principles of exercise therapy in common areas and settings of adult rehabilitation.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Describe the benefits, guidelines, complications and limitations of exercise therapy with people who have musculoskeletal, neurological and cardio-respiratory conditions respectively

  2. Critically appraise the evidence on the application of exercise therapy in rehabilitation

  3. Select and interpret relevant assessment tools for use in screening and developing baseline measures for exercise programs in rehabilitation

  4. Develop an exercise therapy plan, incorporating relevant equipment and technology, for designated case studies

  5. Identify how to assess and measure outcomes in exercise therapy

  6. Identify and apply processes to facilitate a client's long-term maintenance of function by the use of exercise.
