Topic description
This topic focuses on the aetiology of stroke and the risk factors that can lead to stroke disease. We revise the neuroantomy and physiology of stroke, the current concepts of neuroplasticity and the principles behind optimal acute stroke care. There is a particular emphasis on the variety of clinical presentations following stroke and the role of the multidisciplinary team in recognising, assessing and managing these factors in the early rehabilitation of a person with stroke within the inpatient setting. We also discuss the impact of stroke on the client, family and friends and the role of early education and support during the acute hospital phase.
Educational aims

  • Review and update your knowledge of stroke recovery.

  • Update your knowledge of Neuroanatomy & Neurophysiology in relation to stroke

  • Increase understanding of the key elements in the rehabilitation of a person who has had a stroke.

Expected learning outcomes

  • Explain the epidemiology of stroke disease

  • Describe the Neuro physiological processes underlying stroke

  • List all the risk factors for stroke disease

  • Recognise and describe the many clinical features of a stroke

  • Discuss the relationship between clinical presentation and recovery prognosis.

  • Outline the key aspects of Acute Stroke Care, and review the evidence supporting Acute Stroke Units.

  • Describe the role of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and functional Magnetic Resonance
  • Imaging (fMRI) in investigating stroke motor recovery.

  • Review the role of the multidisciplinary team in the assessment of a person with a stroke.

  • Discuss the role of the client and family as part of the multidisciplinary team, and give examples of cultural differences that can influence the rehabilitation process.

  • Discuss the role of Education and Support as part of Acute Stroke Care.
