Topic description
This topic utilises a problem-based learning approach and is based around a series of case studies of patients with musculoskeletal disorders of the lower limb. The subjects covered are:

  1. Ankle sprain

  2. Anterior cruciate ligament injury and reconstruction

  3. Fractured neck of femur

  4. Amputation

Each scenario, in conjunction with recommended readings, related resources and assignments, provide the framework for developing the student’s knowledge of the incidence and mechanism of injury, key assessment findings and the current evidence available to support treatment selection. Topics also encompass a critical appraisal component, and review of related psychosocial issues and multidisciplinary models of injury management.
Educational aims
This topic aims to introduce students to the key principles underlying the clinical practice of musculoskeletal rehabilitation of lower limb conditions. Specifically, this topic will:

  • Increase understanding of the key principles in the rehabilitation of a person who has a lower limb musculoskeletal injury.

  • Outline secondary and tertiary prevention in lower limb musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

  • Outline return to work pathways and the role of rest, physiotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy relevant to lower limb musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

  • Outline an evidence based clinical practice approach to management of common lower limb musculoskeletal conditions.

  • Develop the skills required to critically appraise current interventions and encourage students to use these skills to critique and inform clinical practice.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the key principles of lower limb musculoskeletal rehabilitation applied to specific conditions.

  • Formulate a detailed best-practice rehabilitation plan for a client undergoing rehabilitation for a lower limb musculoskeletal condition.

  • Demonstrate the skills required to critically evaluate scientific literature in a controversial area of musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

  • Demonstrate the skills required to critically evaluate clinical practice.
